Apache Tomcat 4.1 is a web server for Java Servlets and JavaServer pages.
This web java server provides all the tools and files necessary to startup a web server in almost any platform with the minimum of resources due to its java portability. As a web server provides many features like the SSL, CGI, SSI, load balance, proxy support, virtual hosting, among many other services.
Apache Tomcat 4.1 implements a new servlet container (called Catalina) that is based on completely new architecture. The 4.1 releases implement the Servlet 2.3 and JSP 1.2 specifications.
It contains significant enhancements, including administration features based on JMX technology, a brand-new control panel based on JSP and Struts, a new Coyote Connector (HTTP/1.1, AJP 1.3 and JNI support).
Some other minor features could be named like the rewrite of Jasper JSP page compiler, improvements on performance and memory efficiency, enhanced manager application support for integration with development tools, and some custom Ant tasks to interact with the manager application directly from build.xml scripts.
